ROUND 9 OF SCAVENGING BEGINS!

Each month I will scour the interwebz looking for the best articles on public speaking.

I'll be looking for topics like these:

  • Overcoming the fear of public speaking
  • Presentation tips
  • Body language and other technical speaking tips
  • And anything in between...

I'm looking for the interesting, the fascinating, the practical, and anything with worthwhile information to help you become a better speaker.

The best of the freaking best!

The purpose is to save you time. A lot of what's out there can get repetitive and end up wasting your time.

Don't worry, though, I'm doing the scavenging so you don't have to. It will ALL be right here for you.

1. 10 Tips For Giving Effective Virtual Presentations

Great and relevant article for this day and age. Since video is such a huge part of how we communicate, it's important to understand that it is a form of public speaking. This includes filming videos and uploading them to YouTube, Skype calls, webinars, you name it...Here are 10 tips for doing it right, written by fellow public speaking junkie, Matt Abrahams. Check out the article here.

Equally cool is Matt's book Speaking Up without Freaking Out: 50 Techniques for Confident and Compelling Presenting.

2. 10 Tips To Help You Become A TEDx Speaker

This is a little different than what normally makes the TOP 5 list, but it's too useful NOT to share. Normally I bring articles that will make you a better speaker, whether that means overcoming your fear, practice methods, or other technical speaking topics. But in this article by Dina Pestonji, she goes over how to actually get booked for a TEDx talk. It's basically a chance to put your skills into action! Check out her Huffington Post article here

3. Scientific Ways to Fight Stress, Fear and Anxiety

This piece was written by Audri Taylors, a reporter for the University Herald. I'm a fear basher, and this article makes the cut. It's not specific to public speaking but much of overcoming fear is a universal skill that can be applied anywhere fear is. The post is short and lovely, and not to mention the 2nd bullet point is spot on! Check out the article here.

4. 5 Simple Ways To Become A Better Speaker

The trouble with finding articles worthy of the TOP 5 list is that much of what's available includes overlapping topics, and not only that, they include what I'd deem "common" knowledge. So, my goal then is to find articles that have unconventional or unique tips that aren't already widely available. This article by Carol Roth does just that. These 5 tips range from combating nervousness to how to present your content. Number 2 is brilliant. Check out the article here

5. Six Critical Elements That Make TED Talks Compelling

The reason I chose this article is because each of the 6 tips are given by a different person. The more perspective you can get, the more experience you can absorb. In a way it's the equivalent to reading six articles in one! Okay, maybe not that much...just check out the article already...

That's it for this edition of Tactical Talks Top 5. If you have a worthy article, get in touch for a chance to have it featured in next month's edition. Until next time!
