The Most Important Promise You Could Ever Make

public speaking fuel promise

Promises are important. The ones we make to our friends, our family, and even our pets are very important, and we should probably do our best to keep them.

But what about promises to yourself? Ya, those…they are of killer importance, and they happen to be the most important promises you could make.

So then, here’s the promise I urge you to make. Promise yourself this: “I will never give up. Never.” When you say this to yourself, don’t do a half-ass recital. Mean it. Say it with conviction. Emotionally charge it with a you against the world mentality. I mean, you need to MEAN IT!

It has to be said again and again. Not once a month. Not once a week. At least once a day with a conviction from hell. We are “out of sight, out of mind” creatures. We forget things quickly and the world is a cesspool of distraction. The idea is to keep it in front of your face so that you can’t NOT see it at least once a day.

Of course, there is one requirement: You’ve got to actually have something that you’re NOT GOING TO GIVE UP ON. You know, like a goal or something.

No. This isn’t some hoopty doopty supernatural sorcery like “The Secret” or anything like that. Doing this in it of itself will not capture your goals for you. Don’t think for a second that I am saying that or I’ll be knocking at your door! (not really)

Once you have a goal in mind, this is when the glue of conviction begins to shine. Motivation is always short-lived. Always. Unless of course you make a conscious effort to do something about that, such as telling yourself daily that you are not going to freaking quit. Feel it in your chest as you say it. Say it with a passionate defiance toward the blockade that’s preventing you from getting what you want in life. It’ll almost feel like a tickle in your solar plexus. What it really is though is a confirmation to yourself that you damn well mean what you’re telling yourself.

Do me a favor. Get a pack of 3×5 index cards. Rip open that plastic film and pull a single card out. Lay it flat down on a level surface. Pull out your favorite pen and write down these words: I will never give up. Never.

Read them to yourself in your head. When you say the first “never,” you better be wearing your best face of defiance–all grimacing and warrior-like. Then, read it out loud. Read it as if someone just minutes ago told you that they were going to stomp on your chest and do everything possible to stop you from getting to where you want to be in life. Screw that guy!

Make this promise everyday and watch your life change.

P.S. And as a bonus you can use this refusal to quit as fuel to overcome the fear of public speaking. It really works. When you feel like backing out of a speaking opportunity, make the promise. I will never give up. Never. Hold yourself to it. You’ll be glad you did. Grab a copy of “7 “Ninja” Hacks To Tame The Fear Of Public Speaking” while you’re at it. It’s free and possibly entertaining.
