Analyzing My Losing Toastmasters Contest Speech

Matt KramerPublic Speaking, Speech Breakdowns

Last time was a little different than the norm where we worked through the finalists from the 2017 Toastmasters International Speech Contest. It was in-depth and provided a boatload of useful data.

Today we're gonna continue the trend of deviating from the norm. And with that, today's speech breakdown is going to be for my own LOSING SPEECH from the 2015 Toastmasters Speech Contest! (from the District level contest).

Well, technically, it did win at 3 levels but wasn't going to cut it at the top. I had some inklings as to why, but after analyzing several championship speeches, I can pinpoint the reasons for it's ultimate failure.

Using the same format as my previous breakdowns, we'll be able to compare a championship level speech with one that "mom said she liked." It will highlight the fact that there are levels to the art of public speaking, and that these breakdowns are intended to help us close that gap.

Here's a sample of what's inside:

  • Full speech transcript
  • Speech statistics (Word count, time of speech, title)
  • Humor Statistics (Laughs Per Minute and Words Per Laugh)
  • Use of "You" focused words versus "I/Me" focused words
  • Foundational Phrase + how often it was used
  • Time Transitions
  • Stage Movement
  • Stories
  • And much more plus an in-depth speech analysis!
