Is Public Speaking Fear Too Much To Handle For Most People?

Matt KramerOvercoming Fear, Public Speaking

The past several weeks I’ve been uninspired.

Procrastination has been my top adviser. Not really sure why. Perhaps it’s that life is and will always be a goliath-sized roller coaster full of ups and downs.

Straight up...I’ve been contemplating whether or not this is the right path for me. Is there enough interest? Are there enough like-minded individuals that can see how overcoming the fear of public speaking can benefit them, too? Do I even care enough to break through to those that don’t?

What is the goal of Tactical Talks? My best way to describe it: To help people overcome the fear of public speaking so they can gain the confidence to rise the fuck up and go after their goals in life.

I try to make it fun although I get that the subject isn’t as universally “cool” as ham and pineapple pizza or Glenn’s eye from The Walking Dead, but the benefits make those things look amateur.

What I’ve had to do is jump in a mental time machine. Why did I start to begin with? What made me care?

Here’s what I came up with:

1. On A Personal Level: Before And After

The obvious proof to myself is that public speaking (the fear) was extremely difficult for me to deal with, and now it’s not. And not only speaking, I regularly do things now that I never would have done prior to overcoming the fear of public speaking. NEVER. It’s just that simple.

Self-confidence established; caring what others think surgically removed.

It’s not easy to describe the tangible benefits when speaking to others, I wish it were. But I've continued to try.

2. What I’ve Learned About Fear, Myself And The World

I’ve learned how my body responds to fear (science and stuff), I’ve learned how my mind responds to fear (symptoms and direction of thoughts), and I’ve learned a simple truth about life (why the vast majority will never reach their goals in life: FEAR).

Those 3 lessons apply to any challenge in life. It’s not to say that I don’t experience “fear” anymore, it’s that I know exactly how to manage it.

Anyone can learn these lessons and use them...if they dared to try.

3. Others Have Experienced The Same Transformation

Another core reason I started Tactical Talks is the amount of people I’ve met in Toastmasters that have dramatically changed their lives as a result of having conquered their fears.

It’s undeniable. I've witnessed it.

This is the ultimate path for self-development, and that’s why I care.

Here’s where I'm at...

The reasons are just as important today as they were then. That I know for sure. But is that enough?

Could it be that there must be a goal or reason why you would want to overcome the fear of public speaking? I believe this to be true.

Am I attempting something more difficult than parenting? When parents tell the kids what they “should” do, such as “eat your veggies!”, “brush your teeth before bed!” or “don’t do heroin while the sun’s still out!” The kids are going to do the exact opposite even though the parents are probably right.

Am I preaching? Maybe. Is that such a bad thing when the message is important? I don’t think so.

Regardless, I must not forget that it’s not about me. It’s about sharing experience and knowledge to help those that want it. It’s what I’ve attempted to do here.

Maybe I can make a bigger difference doing something else. My stubbornness says keep going. Only time will tell.

Whatever happens, don’t be afraid to keep building yourself up. Don’t be afraid to take chances in life. My brother once told me, “Take your passion and make it happen. No one will care more than you.”

Have a good day.
